In the past, car manufacturers moved cars by subsidizing leases. The monthly lease cost was lowered by increasing the residual value, which lowered the monthly lease payment, thereby selling (leasing) more cars.

Lease Residual Values are Inflated in your Favor
But the value of the vehicle at the end of the lease was almost always less than the contracted residual and each of the off-lease cars then had to be sold in the wholesale market at a loss of several thousand dollars.

Some of the big backers of lease financing, Chrysler, some New York banks, and others, each lost several hundred million dollars in each of the past two or three years because they had to sell the off-lease cars on the open market for less than the residual value.

Take Advantage of Too Many Cars for Sale
Therefore the buy or lease a new car decision is moot as long as manufacturers are subsidizing leases because they have too many cars to sell; a one-time opportunity is present, namely:, lease it now and buy it at a discount the end of the lease and save thousands of dollars.

Should I Buy or Lease a New Car
By initially leasing a car, the maker is essentially offering a price that cant be beaten. It may actually approach or be lower than the employee cost widely advertised. Then buy the car at the end of the lease.

At the end of the car lease the company financially backing the lease most likely will sell the car on the open market at a loss. Why not intervene at that point and buy the car for less than the residual value and put that loss into your pocket as money saved?

Check out your Car's Used Car Value Prior to Lease End
About three months before the end of the lease, cruise the used car lots and notice what your car is being offered at. Note tha the used carprice is always higher than the resiudal value to allow for dealr costs and profit. A ten percent cushion is not unreasonable.

Then compare the asking price on the used car lot with the residual value in your lease contract. The residual value may be larger than the asking price for a similar model on the used car lot. That means that the company owning your leased car will have to sell it at a loss when you turn it in.

Now you put in the knife and buy the car (no commissions paid to anyone on this transaction) at the end of the Lease and keep several thousand dollars in your pocket.

Bypass the Dealer to make your Buyout Offer
From your dealer, get the phone number of the company that owns the car you leased. Call them and offer to buy your leased car for the asking price on the used car lot less about 10% at least.

If they object, point out that they will have to sell the car at a loss because the residual value is more than what the car is worth on the used car lot. They know that, but hate to admit it.

So lease the car of your dreams today and forget about excess mileage charges.

A true-life example
A business friend of mine had a three-year-old leased car with a contract residual value of $28,000. Looking at the used car lot he found he could buy one just like it for $24,000. He assumed the company that financed the lease would loose at least $2,000 in selling it for less than the contracted residual value.

Through the dealer he offered $22,000 to buy the car as is and his offer was promptly accepted, including 3%, 3 year financing. His dealings, all by phone (no face to face negotiations needed) were with the company financing the lease. Very few RV tires actually wear out. Most of them rot out due at least partially to the sun. The sun's UV rays are persistently working away at the tire rubber. This deterioration leads to cracks in the sidewalls and tread areas. When these cracks get bad enough, your tire gives up. The result is at best a flat tire, at worst, a blowout. All of us have seen rigs along side the road with shredded tires.

Too often, the damage is not just the tire, but also damage to the rig. Sometimes, the end result is loss of control and a crash. It is important to actually inspect your tires for proper inflation and condition each trip out. If you have any doubts, go to your trusted tire supplier for an inspection. The life you save might be mine.

You cant stop tire deterioration, but you can sure slow it down. Just like you protect your skin from the sun, you can protect your tires from the sun. One of the best methods is to keep your tires out of the sun. How? Cover your tires. There are vinyl tire covers that wrap around the tire. There are flat tire covers that attach to the side of your rig and drape over the tires. The wrap around are less expensive, but more difficult to install. The flat allow air to circulate, match the rig better, easier to install especially without getting your sleeves dirty, but cost more. Plywood can be leaned up against them, but it does look tacky. Some chemical compounds can be applied like sun tan lotion. Not all work equally. In fact, some tire companies speak out against them. There are some that probably do more damage than good.

Actual use of your rig promotes tire longevity. The flexing of the tire through use actually releases some of the internal rubber compounds. These components help protect the tire. There is nothing like another reason to use your RV. If your RV is going to be parked for an extended period of time, then use a vapor barrier between the concrete or asphalt and your tire.

A major cause of tire failure is under inflation. Follow the instructions and inflate your tires to the proper pressure for your RV weight. Check the pressure when the tires are cold. Buy a decent tire pressure gauge from your local auto parts store. They are cheap when compared to the price of a tire. If you are not sure of the right pressure, your local tire store can help you. A tire failure leaves you stranded by the side of the road. A blow out usually damages your RV. Avoid the problem as much as possible.

Just inside the guard gate, the world renowned 17-Mile Drive in Carmel, Calif., begins with a primarily downhill and often winding two-lane road to Pebble Beach Golf Links. The tree-lined route features lavish, oceanfront homes and a predominately forest-like setting along California's central coast.

It's a perfect several-mile locale for drivers who like to shift through gears. And it's not-so-surprisingly pleasant while doing so in the 2005 Honda Accord.

With its V6, six-speed manual transmission offering, the exceedingly popular model crosses categories. The Accord is listed as a midsize vehicle and it's often compared to the Chevrolet Malibu, Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry.

But the 24-valve, 3.0-liter, 240-horsepower coupe is just as much sports car as it is anything else. And it provides one more reason why the Accord in its more than 25 varieties is among the most popular and most often best-buy categorized vehicles on the road.

During my weeklong test drive, I drove the Accord Coupe round-trip from Sacramento to the Monterey Peninsula. The interstate portion of the journey included about 400 miles. I drove the aforementioned section of the 17-Mile Drive six times round-trip on clear, blue sky days and in heavy rain. It made little difference.

In all driving conditions, the Accord Coupe performed with confidence. Steering and handling is responsive and poised. Lane changes are smooth. While not as quick as other vehicles categorized as sports cars, the Accord Coupe accelerates well and finds its ways through gears more than adequately. Its 17-inch wheels further add to the tight road feel. The Accord's ride is also adequately quiet.

Like all Hondas, the Accord Coupe's interior is designed in a straightforward manner. Gauges and all instrumentation are clean and used simply. The navigation system is likewise efficient and easy to learn.

Despite its coupe status, front-seat passengers have comfortable leg, body and head room. Back seat passengers (two fit comfortably) have easy access. Side rear-view vision is slightly impeded by headrests and side pillars. The driver's seat, while comfortable for a six-foot, 185-pound driver, is void of the superior seat cushioning of high-end vehicles.

Standard interior features are plentiful: leather-trimmed seats, AM/FM, six-disc CD with six speakers, XM satellite radio, heated front seats, power window and door locks, illuminated visor vanity mirrors, cruise control, exterior temperature gauge, sunglass holder and well-positioned armrests and storage compartments.

Finding fault with the Accord is difficult, but cargo room could be better, and average city mileage numbers aren't special. Yet, the Honda Accord has built its reputation through the years for good reasons. It does everything well, and offers reliability and great resale value.

Whether a buyer opts for the base LX four-door, four-cylinder sedan, the EX V6 four-door sedan or the EX, V6 coupe, the sportiest model of all, it's hard to improve upon the Accord or find any vehicle with more to offer for the price.

Mercedes-Benz has recently launched its all new C-Class saloon in Germany and will be presenting the same C-Class in South Africa in August this year. The C-Class emphasizes three elements and these are comfort, agility, and safety.

Each of the Avantgarde, Elegance, and Classic lines emphasize a unique characteristic but share the same technologies such as the Agility Control package which includes a situation-sensor shock absorber control, an Intelligent Light System with five distinct functions and the Pre-Safe preventive occupant protection system. The new C-Class range is also equipped with the same quality auto components such as Mercedes Benz heater core. The Mercedes heater core is a small radiator that helps the primary radiator in cooling the coolant to prevent the possible overheating of the car.

The local specs are to be announced at a later stage and some options may differ from overseas markets. For the overseas theres a choice of four and six-cylinder engines with up to 13 percent more output than the previous model coupled with a six percent lower fuel consumption.

The C-Class Saloon has a length measuring 4581mm and approximately 55mm longer than its predecessor. The body width has also increased by 42mm to 1770mm while the wheelbase has an additional 45mm to 2760mm. these dimensions have enabled the front shoulder room to grow by 40mm.

The design of the new C-Class was derived from the modern Mercedes-Benz approach that includes taut lines, and large tranquil surfaces with the front end highlighting a pronounced wedge-shape. And for the first time in Mercedes Saloon, the radiator grille was used as a distinctive feature to make the model variants more visible in the market.

The sporty Avantgarde model features three extended, horizontal louvers and a big centrally positioned Mercedes-Benz star. The Elegance for its part gets a three-dimensional, louvered radiator grille with a high-gloss paint finish which accentuates comfort and luxury. The Classic model as the name suggests has designed that is traditional despite the fact that it is similar to the other two C-Class models in terms of ride and technical specs.

The engines of the C-Class have been increased by around 18 percent in torque while the four and six cylinder units also feature an improved smoothness. Great attention was also given to the further development of the four-cylinder mills. In the petrol range output of the entry-level C 180 Kompressor has been increased from 105kW to 115kW with maximum torque improved 4.5 percent from the previous 220 to 230 Nm, while the C 200 Kompressor develops 15kW more than before.

It also delivers an output of 135kW and revs up a maximum torque of 250 Nm from 2800rpm. It can sprint from 0 to 100km/h by 0.5 seconds faster that any of the previous models. The new C-Class were also made more economical, the C 180 Kompressor consumes 0.31/100km less than the before. On the other hand the combined fuel consumption of the C 200 Kompressor has been reduced by 0.51/100km.

The C-Class diesel option will focus on enhancement of the four-cylinder unit. There are already several improvements done to the engine, turbocharger and common rail direct injection altering more than 90 components in the process. The said modifications were done by engineers at Stuttgart. And as result of the conducted modification is a new C 220 CDI with a peak output of 125kW from the 110kW previously and delivers a potent torque of 400Nm from the previous 2000rpmagain an 18 percent increase power than before. Similarly fuel consumption has been further reduced by up to 0.31/100km and according to Mercedes Benz the C 220 CDI is capable of traveling 100 km on just 6.1 liters of fuel.

The C-Class offered in Europe remains unchanged with a choice of three petrol units developing 200kW, 170kW, and 150 kW. The new C 320 CDI with its six-cylinder engine has an output of 165 kW. All models in the new C-Class except for the C 350 are equipped with a six-sped transmission featuring Agility Control gearshift as standard. Instead the C350 will get a 7G Tronicthe worlds only 7-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment. This feature is also available for the rest of the six-cylinder C-Class models on request.

In Melbourne: The Jeep brand has strengthened its flagship Grand Cherokee engine lineup when it added a 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine to its range.

The new 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine revs up 148 kW of power and 315 Nm of potent torque mated to a five-speed automatic transmission which has auto variable line pressure adjustment that boost fuel economy. It is also equipped with top-of-line Jeep parts like the popular Jeep axle assembly. The new engine has also becomes the new price leading model for the Grand Cherokee with a staring price of $51,990 which is the RRP or the Recommended Retail Price for the Laredo.

According to Gerry Jenkins, managing director for the Chrysler Group in Australia, The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee is designed, engineered and built on the combination of heritage and capability that has made the Jeep brand an icon in Four-wheel drive circles. Our new V6 petrol engine gives customers even more choice in selecting the model that best suits their needs. Matthias Jeschke, the German off road enthusiast who made the first High Altitude World Record in 2005 aboard a Toyota Land Cruiser has once again set up a new record-breaking high altitude. This time, Jeschke and his team successfully made the high altitude world record in March 13th using two standard Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 3.8 V6 model after a grueling week of expedition and navigation in Ojos del Salado located in the South American mountain range of Chile.

On the first day of expedition in Copiap province in Chile, Matthias Jeschke's team was divided into several groups. These include Two camera teams that will capture the actions in the team's adventure; purchasing team that bought the last requirements; branding team who covered the cars with stickers of the team's sponsors; engineering team that made the special electronic installation; and the navigation team who set up several notebook PCs, GPS equipment, satellite-phones and other things needed for the expedition.

On the 3rd day, most of the team members got a headache, dizzy spell, and a sick feeling because of restless nights spent on the mountain. Matthias Jeschke checked the performance of all team members in order to get them into the suitable groups for the following days of adventure. In addition, the team also conducted a hard testing for the Jeep Wrangler vehicles. The team tested the Jeep Wrangler's capability in driving over boulders, rocks and sand, as well as the tipping limits of the off-road vehicle. Moreover, the engineering team checked the differential locks, shocks steering stabilizers, chassis parts, Jeep grille guard and other technical features of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon.

During the 11th day of expedition, Matthias Jeschke's team went up the Ojos del Salado, to a height of 6120 meters, and with huge effort of all team members, the Jeep Wrangler went up to a height of 6358 meters, which is the old record mark he made last 2005.

The biggest challenge was on March 12, the day before Matthias Jeschke made the new high altitude world record using the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. He said: The team is exhausted. For days we have spent very much time in high altitude. It was windy all the time, and there was sand everywhere which flew into your ears and into any little gap. Climbing was only possible by a supreme effort to the point of exhaustion. Working in the burning sun (which tans the face although it is ice-cold was) also really challenging. Thus, you can see it was time for one day off.

Finally, on March 13th, Matthias Jeschke and his team successfully climbed to an impressive altitude of 6646 meters aboard the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. According to Jeschke, he is sure that no other person will ever reach or even break his unbelievable altitude because the already reached the top between both secondary summits, only 247 meters below the top of the Ojos del Salado and Chile-Atacama mountains.

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) four-star surfing event will take place at the famous Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California from April 24 to 28. In addition, now on its 15th year, Lower Trestles will also host the prestigious Jeep-Body Glove Surfbout event, which will be the start of the Macys California Trifecta Surf Series sponsored by Chrysler Group's Jeep brand. Moreover, the ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior surfing event will also take place at Lower Trestles.

In connection with this, ASP and WQS will be conducting daily beach cleaning to the event this year. The beach clean ups will be held every day for about 2 hours from 2:00 pm up to 4:00 pm. It seems like everyone I know likes the Jeep Wrangler, the timing is right to consider buying a newer used Wrangler. They are fun in the sun, 4 Wheel drive in the winter, and very capable off pavement. There is a large after market of parts available, which makes it easy to modify and upgrade.

I tell people I have a Jeep, and I love it. They ask what kind of Jeep, I say a Jeep Wrangler TJ, a Jeep Jeep? yes a Jeep Jeep. The Jeep Wrangler is one of the classic American cars, It seems like everyone has a jeep story, and everyone wants a Jeep Wrangler. The Jeep Wrangler has a great history starting with the military CJs then on to the CJ5, CJ7, the YJ, the TJ, and now the new 2007 JK model. Currently the DaimlerChrysler Corporation produces many different Jeeps but over the years they have stayed true to the open body 2 door small 4x4 Wrangler Jeep. Each year they make improvements and add capabilities, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is a good example of a nice well furnished vehicle that is extremely capable right off the show room floor.

If you are not made of money, and cannot afford a brand new 2007 Rubicon Jeep, it's a good time to consider a Jeep Wrangler that is a few years old. The Wrangler TJ was produced from 1997-2006. This model was a very popular and the used market is flooded with lower mileage, clean, one owner Jeeps. I am not a car salesmen but I know every car on the market is gently used, and only driven to church on Sunday by a nice old lady. The new model was just released and is in great demand at the dealerships, some dealers may have new 2006 models they want to sell cheap to make room for the new JK models.

Another thing to consider is the large after market of available parts to upgrade, and modify a Jeep. The Jeep TJ has been on the market for almost 10 years and in that time there has been a lot of really nice parts and accessories developed and refined for this model. Everything from full suspension systems, axle upgrades, tires, wheels, bumpers, racks, roll cages, and security systems. If you want a modified jeep, but don't want to pay full price for upgrades, do a bit of shopping around. I am sure you can find a Jeep with a lift kit, upgraded tires, and other accessories ready to go. Remember when you are buying a used vehicle the cost of the upgrades and modifications the previous owner made to the vehicle are severely depreciated. When shopping for a modified Jeep do a bit of research and talk to the previous owner about who did the upgrades, and how the Jeep was used, where the upgrade work was done, and how it was maintained. Jeeps that have been be heavily used off road will show signs of wear that a normal car won't. Look for scrapes and dents under on the underside of the frame, skid plates, and the rear gas tank skid plate. These could be a warning signs of future repair needs. A lot of Wranglers have been modified for looks and then spent most of the time driving in town and on the highway.

Once you are the proud owner of a new toy, there are lots of things you can do to upgrade and enjoy your new jeep. You can just take the top off and go for a summer cruise, or you if you are interested in major upgrades the parts and help is certainly available. Just months after its much publicized release, the 7 passenger Jeep Commander is a major disappointment for DaimlerChrysler to the point where it has become an albatross around the automakers neck. Stung with bloated inventories in excess of 100 days an industry killer the Commander is now commanding discounts of over $5000 per vehicle. What went wrong? Plenty, especially if you read what the pundits and prognosticators have to say about the new Jeep.

No vehicle introduction should be problematic however, as for the Jeep Commander this model has fallen well short of sales goals. There are many reasons why the Commander may be failing to live up to expectations including:

High Fuel Prices Gasoline pushing past $2.50 per gallon cannot help any SUV. With the Commanders three thirsty engine choices, the price at the pump can be painful. Yet, the even bigger Chevrolet Tahoe is selling well despite high fuel prices.

Dated Styling Jeep mentions the Commanders heritage exterior design as one of the chief draws for the vehicle. Take one look at the Commander, and the styling cues of the 1984 Jeep Cherokee quickly come to mind. While some vehicles successfully incorporate the look of an earlier model without copying the style, the Commander looks awfully like the earlier Cherokee, only stretched out. Personally, I find the style to be dated and awkward.

Cramped Interior Put the Commander up against the next biggest Jeep, the Gran Cherokee, and you will see that the interior space is just about the same. This is bad because the Commander comes equipped with a third row of seats so there should be more room. Many have complained that only two small children could fit in the last row which, incidentally, does not completely fold into the floor like the stow n go feature on the DCX minivans.

Overpriced Fully loaded Commanders are retailing for well over $40,000. While this price range can be expected for the likes of a Yukon, Tahoe, or Expedition, it cant for the Commander. Of course, the Commander is bigger than the Gran Cherokee which is priced just under $40,000. However, if you put the two models side by side, many would say that the Gran Cherokee is the better of the two.

So, will DaimlerChrysler actually discontinue the Commander? That isnt likely. Instead, look for big rebates to remain in place and production to be permanently cut back. For the long term, DCX will need to give some serious consideration as to whether the Commander will remain part of the Jeep line up. In my opinion, if it does, it needs to be seriously overhauled in order to compete in todays marketplace.

In all, the Commander is a costly mistake for the automaker. During these times of strong and aggressive competition, the Commander is a misstep that cannot be ignored by DaimlerChrysler. Goodness knows the Commander is being ignored by Jeep faithful who are spurning the model altogether.

Call it MOPAR madness or call it sheer, ingenious automotive marketing and engineering, but whatever you decide to call the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, you must realize one thing: no production vehicle has effectively combined off road ruggedness with on road durability. Until the Grand Cherokee SRT8 came along that is. Yes, not since the GMC Typhoon has an SUV proven to be a highway dominator as well as an off road maven. However, the Jeep Cherokee SRT8 goes well beyond any 4x4 vehicle by delivering a versatile, pavement pounding, all-around SUV.

The folks at Chryslers Street and Racing Technology (SRT) group could not leave well enough alone. From the Neon to the Viper and from the 300C to the Ram pickup truck, no model has been too sacred to receive a proper work over from the team. First it was a bevy of Dodge models, then it was the Chrysler 300C, but no Jeep model had yet been targeted for the groups overhaul. The Grand Cherokee however was past due as fond memories of the GMC Typhoon likely played a part in the decision to inject SRT steroids into a widely acclaimed Jeep model. With 420 h.p. and 420 lb.-ft of torque, the burly Hemi would serve duty in the Grand Cherokee SRT8 along with 20 inch Goodyear performance tires, Bilstein shocks, four piston Brembo brakes, a Quadra-Trac On-Demand four wheel drive system, and a capable five speed automatic transmission. Indeed, when the project was completed, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 was paired against the Porsche Cayenne SUV and the Jeep won!

The Chrysler Groups Jeep brand will prove enthusiasts that the old charm could be rekindled to make it new once again. Jeeps pool of engineers has redesigned the new Liberty with strong ties to the traditional model.

To some brands, the classic versions of their product lines are better. This is true even with Jeep. This is why the automaker, the American division of DaimlerChrysler AG, has redrawn the 2008 Jeep Liberty to radiate a more classic Jeep aura and form.

The vehicle, which epitomizes the characteristics of a lean and mean machine of more traditional Jeeps, has debuted at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). Behind the innovative features of the new Liberty is the distinctly classic look and feel. And Jeep purists are glad to hear the news. As a fact, even those who are not Jeep enthusiasts are pleased with the changes. Our objective was to refine the design and stay true to the core of the brand, said John Sgalia, the director of Jeep Design.

The redesigned Liberty, scheduled to hit dealerships this fall, entertained several elements that vaulted the auto into a top seller small SUV. Jeeps designers straightened out some of the vehicles curves but retained its quirks.

There are two types of Jeeps, modern and classic, explained Ralph Gilles, Jeep's top designer. We wanted the Liberty to mature but still remain playful, said Gilles, who designed the interior for the original Liberty that debuted in 2002. The open top was really an engineering tour de force.

The Sky Slide, an industry exclusive, works like a giant sunroof creating an open space 33-inches by 41-inches, Liberty engineers said. It's four times the size of a standard sunroof, said Rick Reuter, the chief engineer who worked on the Jeep Liberty. But it still operates the same way for a driver.

The roof opens electronically, gathering the canvas at either end. When the roof is completely open, passengers in the second row will be able to enjoy open sky ride. The automaker spent several months testing the roof to ensure that it would not leak and would seal tightly when closed. Jeep has always been about being in the open air, and this roof is one way to give our customers that, said John Plecha, Jeep's marketing director.

The new Liberty looks substantially bigger than its ancestors. The automaker has increased its overall length by two inches, expanded the cargo space by three inches, and extended the wheelbase by two inches. The spare tire, once on the rear hatch, was transferred behind the rear axle.

Other features of the redesigned Liberty include the powerful 3.7-liter V-6, new front and rear suspension mated to EBC rotors and other refinements to provide comfy and reliable ride. The new Liberty finishes Jeep's lineup, Plecha noted.

The 2008 Jeep Liberty will make its debut as the new Sky Slider full-open canvas roof; giving the Jeep Liberty that Only in a Jeep open-air experience. Jeep has established itself in the field of off-road vehicle performance. But now it is seeking to appeal to a larger market to cover the young enthusiasts. It is determined to capture the needs of both the young and the old using the charisma of all-new Wrangler.

However, in expanding the target market of the automaker, some Jeep purists are expressing their dissent. They think that the brand has gone too soft than expected. Everybody is worried that Jeep will lose their name, said Cefali, vice president of the Great Lakes Four Wheel Drive Association and also a Jeep consumer. I would hate to see Jeep not being on the foreground of off-roading.

The Jeep Wrangler, the successor to the World War II Jeep, is a mini sport utility vehicle that debuted in 1987. It was first updated in 1997. The next modification happened in 2007 and the latest is for this model year. All-new Jeep Wrangler is equipped with a number of firsts that include the powered windows and door locks. Through the 65-year history of the automaker, this is the very first time that it offers said features.

It seems like they're coming out with some things that are not really off-road capable, added Cefali. Such a sentiment is the reason why it was crucial to talk to Jeep purists when the new Wrangler was merely a sketch, said Jeff Bell, vice president of Jeep, a division of DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group. He added that with competition from newer brands like Hummer and rugged midsize SUVs like the Nissan Xterra, a modern Wrangler had to be built. But the look and features would not offend four-wheel loyalists.

The Jeep Wrangler now comes with fold-down windshield and removable and convertible tops. The exterior of the new Wrangler was designed with its heritage in mind, said Trevor Creed, senior vice president of Chrysler design. Kerry Ann Griffith, a Wrangler fanatic, is happy to know that the powered features do not prevent hardcore Jeep fans from removing doors for summertime ventures. I don't care what they do with the Jeep brand so long as they keep the Wrangler traditional, said Griffith, who goes trail riding at least once a month.

Once people see the new Wrangler, they're going to be blown away by what this thing looks like and what it can do, said Tom LaSorda, Chrysler chief executive officer.

Jeep sales are increased by 11.5 per cent in 2005 and the automaker is eager to further alleviate the sales with its new Compass, the Liberty Diesel and the seven-passenger Commander. That is a big thumbs up that you can grow Jeep, Bell said.

The Jeep Compass is a crossover sport utility vehicles unveiled for the 2007 model year at the 2006 North American International Auto Show. The vehicle uses a 172 horsepower 2.4 liter GEMA I4 gasoline engine for the Australian and European market. Now that the vehicle is modified to cater to a wider market, it comes with loads of promises and surprises. The automaker said the vehicle is engineered to offer more fun, utility, freedom, capability, as well as the potential for exceptional fuel economy and interior flexibility without compromising affordability. Though, the automaker entertained significant modifications, tested parts like the EBC brake rotors will be retained in the model.

The automaker expects that the 2007 Jeep Compass is designed with an urban flair to appeal to new buyers in the compact SUV segment projected to double to 568,000 units by 2010 and triple to 814,000 by 2016 from 297,000 units in 2004. The Jeep Compass is designed to lure single women and recently married professionals ranging in age from 20s to 40s. The automaker is also targeting an upscale demographic with a median income of $60,000.

The all-new Jeep Compass features the Jeep brand's signature seven-slot grille, round headlamps and trapezoidal wheel openings and a new silhouette that features a steeply raked windshield. Side-curtain air bags are standard and it is equipped with the new 172-horsepower 2.4-liter world engine produced by Chrysler, Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Hyundai Motor Co.

The Jeep Liberty Diesel, on the other hand, is a compact sport utility vehicle that features 2 new PowerTech engines, a 150 hp 2.4 L I4 and a 210 hp 3.7 L V6, a 2.8 L VM Motori turbodiesel engine became available in the CRD model and four-wheel disc brakes. In 2005, it bagged the title as the best-selling compact sport utility vehicle.

The Jeep Commander, a 7-passenger midsize sport utility vehicle introduced in 2006, features 3 moonroofs, squared-off sides, an upright windshield and very distinct styling. It also offers a base V6 engine with two optional V8s and a new Hemi. In Europe, the vehicle offers a Diesel engine developed by DaimlerChrysler with BlueTec technology.

According to Rebecca Lindland, an analyst with Global Insight Inc., Jeep needs to stay in touch with the changing tastes of buyers, particularly the younger generation. A lot of the younger consumers in the market are premium-oriented, Lindland noted. They look to premium brands so a brand like Hummer is very attractive to them. What Jeep needs to do is become very attractive to that market. They're trying to expand the appeal of the brand overall without alienating core buyers. They need to get the younger buyers interested in Jeep.

Where did the name Jeep come from? Not from the original designer and builder, the Bantam Car Company. It wasnt Willys, the famous manufacturer of the Willys MB, either. Ford didnt pick the name when it was making the GPW, and the U.S. Military never designated the term either. Truth be told, no one knows for sure just how the name Jeep came about, but the one common thread is that all of the theories relate to a sort of general population adoption of the term.

There are a number of theories on the origination of the name. There are reports that the term Jeep was used in Oklahoma in the 1930s to describe specialized trucks used in drilling for oil, and that was how the term was later used by those from the area in describing the Willys MB.

Others believe that the name came from a slang abbreviation of the term G.P., which was an acronym that stood for General Purpose vehicle. The trouble with this theory is that the term General Purpose was reportedly used to describe the US Armys quarter-ton reconnaissance vehicles, and not the Willys. Further, the Willys MB was designated for specific duties and was not referred to in Army circles as a General Purpose vehicle.

Along similar lines goes the theory that the name was a one-vowel slang word replacement for Fords description of the vehicle (the Ford GPW now commonly referred to as the Willys GPW), which referred to it as GP. The G stood for government use and the P referred to its wheel base size of 80 inches. When Ford began making these vehicles some people may have found it difficult to call it a Willys since it was actually manufactured by Ford.

Another explanation of the name has it that it was based on a character from the Popeye comic strip in the 1930s that was known as Eugene the Jeep. This little guy was from another dimension and was blessed with the ability to go anywhere and do anything. He went through walls, scaled huge trees, flew, disappeared, etc. There wasnt anywhere Eugene the Jeep couldnt go. The theory goes that US soldiers were so impressed by the Willys go-anywhere performance that they began calling it Jeep after the character.

Well probably never know the answer to how the name Jeep began, but maybe thats a good thing as it adds to the mystical allure of this American icon. What we do know for sure is that over 70 years later the Jeep, not to mention quite a few Willys, is still going strong!

According to Bloomberg, at least two out of the Big 3 USA automakers are having serious problems this year. GM is estimated to show a sales increase in August over last year, but the primary cause is thought to be a significant shortage in inventory during 2005 rather than robust sales results this year. According to independent analysts, Fords sales will be down from 10% to 15% for the month of August compared to 2005, while Chryslers sales are estimated to be down anywhere from 8 to 15%. Both are experiencing significant declines for the entire year. Chryslers Jeep line of vehicles is experiencing a sizable downturn this year, which has to be troubling to Chrysler upper management!

The Jeep line historically has been somewhat of a pillar of sales strength for Chrysler, but 2006 is seeing an exception to this. According to Chrysler, sales of the Wrangler, Liberty, and Grand Cherokee are all down substantially from 2005. Chrysler reported that through July 31, 2006 year-to-date Wrangler sales were down 17%, Liberty sales were down 23% and Grand Cherokee sales were down 37% when compared to 2005 sales! Sales for July 2006 were down 32% for the Wrangler, 52% for the Liberty, and 58% for the Grand Cherokee. These are huge declines and one must wonder just what is fueling the drop. It has gotten bad enough that Chrysler has recently announced a big sale for their new Wrangler on September 1, 2006. Are the latest Jeep additions, the Commander and Compass, eating into Grand Cherokee and Liberty sales? Are these drops to blame on last years huge incentive programs? Did Chrysler miss the mark with its new version of the Wrangler? Or is the Jeep name losing some of its trading power?

Fuel economy has become a major component of car buying decisions and this could be hurting Grand Cherokee numbers, but, Toyota did not see declines in the sale of its competitors to the Liberty and Grand Cherokee. The RAV4 saw its sales doubled compared to 2005, and 4Runner sales increased 4.4% over July 2005. Honda also reported sales gains in July of 6.8% in its trucks category, which includes SUVs. So the argument for fuel economy being a major contributor to the decline would appear to be a weak one.

Cannibalization could explain some of the decline, at least for the Grand Cherokee, but that still wouldnt explain the huge drop for all three vehicles. The Compass has only been out a short while and during July it was reported that only 707 were sold. The Commander numbers do appear to be good and they could explain some of the drop in the Grand Cherokee numbers.

The incentive program hangover may also explain some of the decline but certainly not all of it. Once again sales numbers were up for Toyota and Honda. Wouldnt they be experiencing some affects from the major incentive programs of 2005? If they are not feeling the pain, why is Chrysler?

The critics all praised the new Wrangler and the general populace seems to have embraced it as well, at least in the discussion forums and such, if not at dealerships by buying the new model. Fuel economy, sales cannibalization and incentive program hangover may be contributing factors to declining sales, but it seems that there has to be more to explain the size of the decline, especially in the face of Toyota and Hondas performances.

Could these declines be explained by a diluted and declining image? The Jeep image has certainly been tarnished this year with the huge recall of the Liberty, and, the front brake problems and resulting litigation with the Grand Cherokee. Its hard to sell based on quality when youre recalling 800,000 vehicles. Critics bombing the new Compass, Chryslers latest Jeep addition, hasnt helped the brands image either. In the recent past some experts speculated that Chrysler would weaken the Jeep name with the addition of the more family oriented vehicles, the Liberty, Commander and Compass, and right now it would be hard to argue with this position. Chrysler seems to have gotten pretty far away from its very successful Trail Rated campaign with the Compass. To add insult to injury, the Dr. Z. advertising campaign has reportedly been a bust.

We may not understand all of the specifics, but the Jeep image and brand identity have seen some damage with the quality issues (see Grand Cherokee brake issue and Liberty recall) and the less than excited reception to its latest addition. It would seem that this may actually be what has lead to Jeeps declining sales. Current Chrysler management had better get to the bottom of their quality issues and learn how to manage the brand more effectively, or risk losing Jeeps wonderful marketing power!

History of The Jeep

The history of the jeep goes back about 65 years to around the 1940s. It was after World War I, that the US Army knew that they needed a vehicle that could go anywhere. In 1940 the army put out the specifications for a vehicle they believed would be the vehicle of the armys future.

There were over 130 U.S. auto manufacturers that were asked to place their bids for the first 70 jeeps for the U.S. army. The first jeep delivered to the army was from the Bantam Company and was called the Model 60, or better known as the MKII.

Shortly after this Willys Overland and Ford delivered their first model to the army. They were the Quad from Willys and the Ford Pigmy. Each company built 1500 units of each model for the army to field test. Each model was modified after field-testing and became the Bantam 40 BRC, the Ford GP and the Willys MA.

Willys won the armys contract to build a model that combined the best of all three models and was named the MP.

It was not long after this that WWII broke out and Ford was brought in to build the GPW.

Not long after WWII Willys built the first civilian version of the jeep, the CJ2A and soon after that came the CJ-3A. It wasnt until 1970 that the well-known CJ-5 was built and this is when the history of the jeep began to take off.

In 1986 the jeep wrangler YJ was introduced and by 1996 there were a total of 632,231 of the YJs built. It was in 1997 that the jeep TJ was built and is still the jeep of choice today.

The newest jeep that was introduced in 2004.5 is the jeep wrangler unlimited. The wrangler unlimited is 15 inches longer than the jeep TJ with 13 inches added to the rear cargo area and an extra 2 inches added to the rear seat area for some much needed extra leg room.

For some, jeep troubleshooting comes easy because of all the experience they have had over the years. But for the rest of us, trying to troubleshoot our jeeps to find out what is causing our problems could be ranked right up there with pulling teeth.

Here are some of the more common problems you may encounter with your jeep and what you can do to fix them.

*My jeep wont start

I have run into this problem with my jeep as well as other vehicles that I have owned and the problem can usually be caused by corrosion on the battery post and battery cables.

You can fix this by disconnecting your battery cables and cleaning the battery post and connecters with a wire brush.

*My engine stalls while accelerating

The first thing you need to ask your self is, does this normally happen on cold wet mornings when the engine is cold?

If the answer is yes, then the most probable cause is moisture in your distributor cap.

If you answered no to this question, has this problem become more frequent over time?

If yes, it sounds like you may have a vacuum leak that is causing your problem.

If the problem has not gotten worse over time you more then likely have a bad throttle position sensor.

*My gas mileage is not what it should be

There are literally dozens of reasons that could be causing poor gas mileage. We will take a look at some of the more common causes.

Check to make sure that your tires are not under inflated; this could cause extra friction between your tires and the road making your jeep work harder causing reduced gas mileage.

If you havent had a tune up on your jeep, this is more then likely the cause of your poor gas mileage. Give your jeep a tune up and be sure to change your air filter as this could also contribute to the problem.

We have only touched on a few of the more common problems people face while jeep troubleshooting. There are many great resources out that will make jeep troubleshooting much easier and fun for everyone.

It might be a long way from the outback or actual off road driving but Chrysler is becoming very innovative in its marketing efforts to allow potential clients to experience the Jeeps trail rated difference!

In early October at the South Florida International Auto Show, Chrysler set up what they called Camp Jeep. To those less term enriched, Jeep made a driving exhibit to give test drivers the real-life experience of driving a Jeep off road. This was no minor feat for Jeep. To build their course at the Miami Beach Convention Center, they had to haul in over 220 yards of mulch and spend almost six days developing the obstacle course. The trail featured a water obstacle and an 18-foot hill as well as other driving challenges. All to show potential clients just what a Jeep can do out on the trails.

If this wasnt enough, Chrysler is going it one better at their upcoming Full Throttle Test Drive Event at the Wild Rivers Water Park in Irvine, CA (Los Angeles area) this Saturday (Oct. 28) and Sunday (Oct. 29). Chrysler will be featuring its full line of vehicles on three different specialty courses; one of which will be a 4x4 off-road adventure course. Consumers will get the chance to test the off-road capability of Chryslers Jeep Wrangler, Grand Cherokee and Commander on this course.

This event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and is free. Food and drinks will be available. Pre-registration is not required to attend. You do need to be 18 years or older with a valid drivers license to participate in the vehicle driving tests.

Jeep is creating an interactive ad for the Patriot which aims to attract young buyers. The Jeep Patriot interactive campaign titled Choose Your Adventure allows customers to take part in developing the story. Customers may choose from among the 44 scenes that they want to take part in.

Starting today until April 1, the Jeep Patriot advertising is going to be aired whenever there are news about March Madness or the NCAA Mens College Basketball Championship such as CBS Sports, College Sports TV, Fox Sports and College Hoops Network. Sports-themed banners about the Jeep Patriot will appear on every web site devoted to sports such as ESPN.com, SportingNews.com, SportsIllustrated.com plus home pages of AOL and Yahoo. Print ads were earlier released and appeared in USA Today and will continue until the March Madness.

For the TV Commercial of the patriot, three main characters are going to be presented namely Gary, Srini, and Jodi. These three are the very same characters that are included in the interactive campaign of Jeep Patriot online. And each online participant will be considered as the fourth character that will take part on a backwoods camping trip.

In addition, Trans World Entertainment operates their retail stores named f.y.e. (For Your Entertainment). Trans World Entertainment currently operates more than 800 f.y.e stores all over the United States, making it as the largest retailer in the nation for the entertainment category.

According to Chrysler, he promotion made sense for Jeep since a large portion of f.y.e.'s customers are young men aged 18 - 34, the demographic coveted by Jeep for the Wrangler. The State Fair of Texas became a huge battleground for those people who were vying to take home a 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. But still, the whole ordeal was not an easy task for the contenders. They had to go through tons and tons of dirty and filthy mud to get to the prize.

There were more than a hundred people who joined the grand event. They had to go diving into mud and even digging through it. There was a giant pool which contained more than 14,000 gallons of mud and this became their battleground. The challenge was dubbed as Jeep Stick in the Mud.

So what did the contestants go through? Not only did they have to battle it out with each other and with that really dirty thing called mud. The contestants also had to survive through various rounds of games so as to be able to be nearer to the grand prize which was the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. It was not disclosed through if the runners up had some prizes, like Jeep parts or accessories, to take home though.

Who took home the award? It was Homero Perez who hailed from Garland, Texas who bested everybody else by being able to earn the highest points after all rounds. But he did have to go through a great ordeal of trying to find and uncover hundreds and hundreds of sticks in the huge pool of mud. But it looks like all was worth his sweat for he now proudly owns an all new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited that holds four doors. Perez even proclaims, It felt great to get out there and wade through all that mud. This is because the weight of the vehicle would not be evenly spread over the wheel and tire width. Resistance is also increased, thus you wheels and tires could wear out fast, and gas mileage could be significantly reduced.

Wider wheels are sometimes required to adequately support larger and wider tires. This provides increased traction in a variety of different terrains such as sand and mud. Vehicles with larger wheels and tires also make less of an impact in the terrain opposed to a vehicle with narrow wheels that cuts into the terrain creating ruts and erosion.

However, if you're going to some really big tires, you might have to upgrade the stud size to handle the increased loads. Check with the after market wheel and tire manufacturer for their recommendations.

When measuring, be sure that your tape is located dead center on the hole (or on one edge with the five-hole pattern) for accuracy. It's very hard to tell small differences, but 1/4 inch can make a big difference. For example, the largest rim size you can get with a 5-on-4 and 1/4 wheel pattern is a 14 inch rim. But there are numerous 15 inch rims available in 5-on-4 and 1/2 patterns, so you can see how critical an accurate measurement is.

If the rim is still on the vehicle, it's often hard to get that accurate measurement. One simple trick is to take a sheet of paper and press it down firmly on the studs you need to measure then measure the marks on the paper.

Another trick is to take some stiff wire - a coat hanger will do fine - and bend the wire into a wide U shape, using the ends of them to act like calipers.

The very best method is to actually take the wheels off the vehicle, lay them flat on the ground, and measure the holes carefully, while looking straight down.

In spite of reported over-all declining sales in SUVs, Jeep has seen its two largest entries into this Auto segment enjoying surprising results for the month of October 2005. As reported in the article Topic: Big trouble for big SUVs: Sales and prices of used-utes continue to slide in an edition of the Automotive News, Prices are falling, and they are falling fast, Webb says.

Sales of new large SUVs plummeted 48.1 percent in September from a year ago. For the first nine months of 2005, those sales were 15.5 percent below the same period last year.

Daimler-Chrysler reported that sales of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the newly available 2006 Jeep Commander were surprisingly strong during October 2005. Reported sales of the Grand Cherokee were 14,298 Grand Cherokees sold, a 6% increase from October 2004, and it was reported that there were 3,241 units for the Commander sold in October 2005. This sales figure was achieved in spite of the fact that the Commander was still being distributed to dealers during the month.

Why has Jeep been able to go against the tide? Maybe its because they are staying in touch with their past while offering improved technology and more features. This can be seen with Jeeps latest introduction to their family, the Commander. The Commander is Jeeps answer to the Ford Expedition, Chevy Tahoe, Cadillac Escalades, and Toyota Sequoias. In body style the Commander is a bit of a throwback, recalling the boxy design of the once popular Willys Station Wagon, the Jeep Wagoneer, and the more recent Cherokee. While Jeep returned to its roots in the body style, it has added quite a few new features and options. The more basic additions are a 3rd row of seating and stadium styled seating (each row is slightly elevated above the row in front of it), which offers a good view for all seats. Some outstanding features include All-Speed Traction Control System (TCS), BeltAlert, Digressive Load Limiting Seat Belt Retractors, Electronic Roll Mitigation, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Emergency Brake Assist, Enhanced Accident Response System, Parksense Rear Back-up Detection System, and the Tire Pressure Monitor and Warning Signal.

Many of the new technology systems are designed to improve vehicle handling and safety. ESP enhances driver control and helps manage directional stability under various driving conditions. When the system picks up a noticeable difference between the vehicles direction and the drivers intended track, ESP offers selective braking and throttle control to place the vehicle back onto the drivers intended path. The Electronic Roll Mitigation system monitors the vehicles roll attitude and lateral pressures to determine rollover potential. When necessary it will reduce engine torque along with a burst of braking applied to the appropriate wheel to assist in stabilizing the vehicle. In other words, it monitors, anticipates, and takes the necessary steps to help avoid rollovers. TCS improves mobility and helps to prevent wheel slippage when accelerating on slick driving surfaces. This system utilizes throttle control as well as the brake application of older traction systems. This state-of-the-art technology provides a more smooth and controlled response over past systems. Other available options are third seat comfort controls, a DVD entertainment system for the back, power sun-roof and Command-View skylights above the second row, digital read-out for tire pressure, alarm system, a hands-free communication system, a DVD navigation system, and Daimler-Chryslers patented SmartBeam headlamp system. An offroad package is also available that includes a steel transfer case skid plate, fuel tank skid plate, and all-terrain tires.

What about the engine? You can choose between two V-8 choices and a 3.7 liter V-6. The Select Trac option on the Jeep Cherokee gets you the New Process NP 242 transfer case. This transfer case gives the following operating modes: 2wd, 4wd with the center differential open, 4wd with the center differential locked, neutral, and 4wd low range (center differential locked)

The addition of a center differential is the main difference between the NP 242 and the NP 231 or Command Trac transfer case. Without a differential, the 231 transfer case offers only part time four wheel drive mode.

The NP 242 transfer case Full time mode opens the center differential allowing the front and rear axles to rotate at different speeds while still being linked by the transfer case. The end with the least traction will get the most torque. While this mode may have some disadvantages off road where a wheel may loose contact with the ground, it has the advantage of being usable on all paved surfaces. Part Time mode - with the center differential locks can only be used on loose or slick surfaces with out possible damage to the transfer case.

I use full time mode on wet streets, hard packed gravel or dirt, some snow and ice situations and on dry pavement when full acceleration without wheel spin is desirable. I use part time mode on loose gravel, dirt, grass and any off road situation. I use Part time mode when RallyCross racing as well.

I use low range for more control in off road situations or on rough gravel roads when traveling downhill to avoid excessive use of the brakes. I also often use low range when positioning my trailer or other towed equipment when precision placement is needed.

The NP 242 transfer case can be switched between 2wd and either 4wd mode at any speed simply by moving the lever. The switch to low range must be made at very low speed - the Jeep manual says 3 mph.

One common operating problem with the 242 transfer case is that it will stick in 4wd even if the lever is moved to 2wd. Internally, moving the lever loads a spring which then applies force to move the selector fork. If the gears are loaded with torque, the spring will not have enough energy to move the sleeve off the gears. Once torque is removed from the gears, the spring will then move the fork and slide the sleeve of the gears.

Momentarily lifting your foot off the gas will often unload the gears enough to allow the spring pressure to move the fork. On some high mileage units, a wear groove will form on the sleeve or gear causing it to stick longer and may require a couple of changes from loaded to unloaded to get the sleeve to release form the gear.

The Jeep NP 242 is lubricated with Automatic Transmission fluid. The level is checked by removing the upper of the two large plugs on the back of the case. The fluid should be level with the upper plug.

The NP 242 has a slip yoke on the tail shaft. If the drive shaft is damaged or removed, fluid will be lost out the tail shaft. Also this seal is important to maintain in good condition to prevent fluid loss.

The NP 242 is a very versatile transfer case and is my choice for three of my five Jeeps. The full time selection gets frequent use in all of them.

Not long ago I bought a used 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee quite cheap. I was hoping that it will be nice and cool, but it was a real disaster. Still there are some good things in it, first of all it is big and the body is in perfect shape, and also the seating feels comfortable, however as a whole my 1994 Grand Cherokee jeep is awful. Now I am sure that I would have been better off with a sensible Honda Civic or anything of the kind, instead of buying the Jeep that I now consider as the worst ever purchase I've made.

The thing I want to begin with is the monstrous gas consumption of this SUV. I knew it will not be as for a Ford Fiesta, but getting only 13 miles per gallon is a bit too much for me, and it only makes me think about a shot engine. What comes next it the unsafe rolling of this totally unbalanced clumsy Jeep, along with its impossible shocks. With this 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee you are actually putting your life to the risk of turning over with every turn you make at a speed greater than 20 miles per hour. What I can say for sure is that I should not have rushed into that without having a detailed check on SUVs, which would have showed me what the possible and most common problems might be. And the only reason I skipped that part for was the thrilling price they gave me for the car

There are good things to be considered also in the 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is very spacious at the back and offers plenty of room, a plus that makes it a great road trip vehicle. Thinking about storage room no one can deny that it is awesome too, and this once again confirms the statement that this is a road trip machine. What is more, I have a killer sound system in the SUV. It was actually decked out by the previous owner who just left it in the car. This sound system not only delivers great bass, but also keeps unbelievably crisp hi-fi sound in the treble scale. Even having that, though, is not at all enough to compensate for the faults it has, and hen I think about t eventually all the money I saved by getting it cheap will soon be wasted for repairs of the shocks, engine, etc. or even only for gas to get it going

Public transportation on land around the world comes in various types. Theres the bus, the taxicab and the lightrail transit. But nothing beats the jeepney, considered the most convenient public transportation in the world. And perhaps nothing is more unique than the Philippine jeepney which plies the major cities in the Philippines. This transportation is proof of the Filipinos creativity and ability to improvise technology into more useful forms.

The first PUJs (public utility jeepneys) were actually made from US military jeeps. Their origin dates back to the post-war era after the Americans left the country leaving behind some of their jeeps. Some of those jeeps were sold while the others were given to Filipinos. Being the innovative and creative people that they are, the Filipinos then remodeled the jeeps to accommodate several people. Metal roofs were added and the jeepneys were adorned with colorful ornaments and painted with bright colors. Since then, the jeepney has become a popular and cheaper means of public transportation and a symbol of Philippine culture.

Sarao Motors and Francisco Motors are the most famous manufacturers of these PUJs. Both companies made the jeepneys individually and buyers ordered the vehicles on contractual basis with their own design specifications. Each jeepney is uniquely built based on the artistic concept of the designer assigned to such vehicle. In fact, the time spent on designing and decorating the PUJ takes more time compared to the building process itself. The entire body, made from galvanized iron sheets and stainless steel, is built by hand using the welding process. Later on, Ford Fieras were also used to make the PUJs.

What makes these Philippine jeepneys attractive are the decorations that adorn its exterior and interior. The various ornaments used include moving horse figurines, flags, colorful and blinking lights, mirrors, paintings and stickers with various sayings ranging from the funny to the serious ones. Stereos that play loud music are another attraction in the PUJs which many young passengers go for. Other improvisations have also been made such as buttons on the interiors walls which passengers have to push to make the driver stop the jeepney. Sometimes, the pushing of the button will coincide with the blinking of a light or a sound that will alert the driver. If not a push button, a string to be pulled is another way of making the PUJ stop once reaching your destination.

The jeepneys nowadays have one fixed route passing from the suburbs to the central business district. These routes are painted along the sides of the jeepney. These PUJs are normally full in the early morning when professionals and students are off to their offices and schools as well as in the late afternoons when most people are home-bound. A single jeepney accommodates 16 passengers and fares are based on the distance from where a passenger gets in and where he or she gets off. Payment of the fares is done on an honesty basis as the driver cant keep track of all the passengers that he has. Although sometimes, he may bring along a companion to take charge of collecting the fares.

Since its invention, countless jeepneys have been made and the government has regulated the number of these PUJs for the various routes available. Drivers are required to have specialized licenses, must stick to their routes and charge fixed fares. Areas have also been designated for loading and unloading of passengers to ensure a smooth flow of traffic unlike before when jeepney drivers will just pick up a passenger anywhere along their way.

I have read numerous consumer ratings / reviews regarding the latest Jeep models. The overall picture is that consumers are happy if not ecstatic about their recent purchase. They mostly rave about the handling, the comfort, and the safety features of their Jeeps. As one person reported, I dont know if it works yet, but just knowing its there gives me added comfort. They were referring to the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with the electronic roll mitigation. Most reviewers were impressed with the comfort of the interior in the Compass and were very impressed with the luxury of the Commander. It was also reported that the legroom for 2nd row seating had ample space. The Compass was said to contain a large amount of cargo space. The people writing these reviews all compared their new Jeep to the previous vehicles they had owned. The recently purchased Jeep usually got the better rating even over a previously owned Lexus model SUV. This speaks well for Jeep.

One person reported that they were almost swayed into not purchasing a Jeep because of the manner the Jeep had been portrayed in a magazine report. It is their opinion that persons writing these reports were expecting the Jeep Compass to be as rugged as the rest of the Jeep line. They also stated that is was their opinion that the Jeep Compass was built and designed exactly as Jeep had intended and that the Jeep Compass was a great crossover vehicle. They took a test drive in it and were enthused by the Compass performance. The most reported feature other than the performance and handling was the gas-economy of the Compass, and even the gas economy for the Commander. The quiet engine of the 5.7L HEMI also seemed to impress those that had purchased a Commander.

Those few reviews that were negative mostly referred to the overall cargo space of the Jeep Commander model and were written by editors. The consumer reviews of the same Jeep model were not nearly as critical. The negative reports from the consumer on the Commander were concerning small details like complains regarding the placement of the cup holder for the 2nd row passengers, the DVD cover not staying on, the navigation system not as simple to use as one on a competitors comparable model, or the rain coming inside the vehicle upon entering and exiting the vehicle. We view these as all minor in nature.

The Jeep Liberty was touted to be the favorite vehicle of consumers that purchased them.In most cases they were buying a second or even third Jeep Liberty to replace their first one. This type of repeat business really supports a vehicle. One such owner reported that the first Jeep Liberty had survived through 7 hurricanes in Florida and the conditions that come along with them. The Jeep Wrangler is a big hit with all of its owners. One person reported having taken a Chevy Blazer off-road and being quickly reminded that it was not a Jeep! It appears that those who own Jeep Wranglers would not be content with any other four-wheel drive vehicle. The new JK versions of the Jeep Wrangler are larger and more comfortable than the previous Wrangler models with stiffer construction and more insulation for a quieter ride.

Many agree that the designers were successful. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the top sellers in the SUV competition.

Jeep has finally done it. A 7 passenger trail rated Jeep is now available at a dealer near you. Long a maker of manly SUVs, the Commander holds true to form as it can easily be taken off road as well as down the highway. Unlike more pedestrian models, the Commander looks every bit the rugged vehicle that it is. For Jeep fans who need the extra room the Commander offers space not available in any Jeep since the Wagoneer was retired a generation ago. Lets take a look at the 2006 Jeep Commander, the focus of this review.

So, why build a seven passenger Jeep? To give customers a choice, thats why. With existing models able to carry only five passengers or less, the Commander meets the demand for a larger model. Instead of losing sales to GM or Ford, Jeep is now able to offer a vehicle that will keep customers from leaving for bigger and roomier models.

The Commander looks a lot like the Cherokee, which was retired in 2001 after an 18 year run. The boxy Cherokee was a favorite with many and the Commander successfully incorporates the Cherokees look and body style.

As it is, the Commander is not a huge beast. At just two inches longer than the Gran Cherokee, the Commander makes use of available space without adding a tremendous amount of bulk.

I like what Jeep has done with the Commander and think that you will too. I am, however, holding my breathe as Jeep prepares to introduce its first non-trail rated model [sacrilege next year; in the meantime the Commander carries on the Jeep tradition with much distinction and aplomb.

This statement summed up for the high praises and awe the crowd bestowed on the Jeep Hurricane took center stage at the Detroit auto show DaimlerChrysler Corporation press conference.

Innovative in style, the Jeep Hurricane included a centrally located twin-engine transfer case, in-board brakes, drive shafts, front and rear steering, and complete corner assemblies. It has a centrally located transfer case coupling power from both engines and distribute all wheel drive torque to each corner of the vehicle. The Jeep Hurricane's Shift-by-wire mechanisms allow the wheels on one side of the vehicle to run in reverse, which, coupled with split solid axles and 55 degrees front and rear wheel toe-in angles, allows the vehicle to rotate around its own axis.

Jeep Hurricane 2005 has Four Wheel and Crab Steering capability, with a combination of traditional and steer by wire technologies. Despite the Jeep Compass signature features such as the seven-slot grille, round lights and four wheel drive, this Jeep is also making quite a noise at the lower end of the SUV market. Designed to attract young car buyers with age ranging from mid 20s to late 30s, the Compass is quite smaller in size compared to the other existing model in the line-up and is made to compete with the likes of Toyotas RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

At close inspection one can tell that the Compass styling is a mixture of slinky curves and chiseled angles that need to be seen in order to be appreciated. Although the Jeep Compass may be considered quite eccentric as compared to other SUVs but there is something endearing about the Compass styling.

Jeep by the way preferred to call their Jeep Compass URV short for urban recreational vehicle. The Compass is more like its cousin the Dodges Caliber in the sense that the two share the same foundation plus some other parts and accessories like Jeep door handle cover taken from the DaimlerChrysler parts bin. But despite the similarities the Caliber and the Compass have ended distinct from each other.

The Compass interior is also a maze of hard plastics which includes the aluminum-look surround used for the centre console. The cabin was also made tolerable with the use of the nifty two-toned leather seats that has made the dark interior more subtle. The seats were very comfortable except for the steering column beating down on your knee caps whenever any footwork is required.

If you not used to lounging behind the steering wheel then youre in for a surprise with the Boston Acoustics sound system at full tilt lolling will somehow makes sense. There is also a set of speakers mounted on the tailgate and can be unclipped once you want to take the party out the car.

The Compass provides a load space of up to 170 cm3 of space with all the seats folded down. The luggage area is covered with a hardy nylon floor cover that can be removed and washed any time.

All of the Compass Limited models are equipped with heated leather seats, power windows, power heated side mirrors, six-disc MP3 compatible CD changer, adjustable steering and a hard sliding armrest located at the top of the center console.

In terms of safety equipment the Compass is equipped with dual front airbags and side curtain airbags, ABS complete with off-road calibration, ESP with yaw sensors, traction control with brake assist and electronic roll mitigation. All of the 18 inch alloys are connected to a standard tire pressure monitor. The Compass will also have the MacPherson strut and multi link arrangement that is a first for any Jeep vehicle.

Jeep Compass will also feature the Freedom Drive all-wheel drive system which cab be manually engaged at any speed by using a bright chrome lever placed just above the hand brake lever. Another first for Jeep is the 2.4 liter World Engine which was developed in partnership with Hyundai and Mitsubishi is also offered in the Compass. The 16-valve four cylinder delivers 125 kW at 6000 r/min and 220 Nm at 4500 r/min.

Jeep has selected Goodyear Wrangler to be its tire provider for the upcoming lineup. Goodyear Wrangler SR-A tires in size P215/65R17 was incorporated to establish Jeep parts to produce more efficient vehicles. Said tire will serve as original equipment for the 2007 version of Jeep Compass. The latter is the new compact SUV from the automaker which is based on Dodge Caliber and GS platform. Said model is now available for dealership.

It can be recalled that Compass was introduced at the 2006 North American International Auto Show last January. Four months after, the first Compass was produced. The latest from Jeep along with Patriot (both based on the DaimlerChrysler/Mitsubishi GS platform), replaced Liberty as the automaker's entry level SUV. Compass is designed as a sporty hot hatch crossover while Patriot is intended to take the traditional wagon appeal.

Compass is the first crossover SUV from Jeep. It has a 172 hp (128 kW) 2.4 L GEMA I4 gasoline engine. Additionally, the car features an electronically-controlled all wheel drive system. The latter is capable of managing torque between speeds of 25 and 65 mph. In the Unite States, said vehicle model has a base price of $15,985.

Jeep Compass boasts its combined functionality, handling, packaging, fuel economy and powerful SUV performance. Compass is given a fully independent suspension for better handling and on-road performance. It is offered in both front- and four-wheel drive, in Sport and Limited models.

The all new 2008 Jeep Liberty is designed to take more of the classic Jeep form. The reason? Well, it is a fact that classic designs are timeless and this is probably the reason why Chrysler has decided to make the new 2008 Jeep Liberty as classic as possible.

The new 2008 Jeep Liberty has made its debut at the New York International Auto Show where it displayed its well-groomed appearance which strongly suggests its classic Jeep heritage. And recently Jeep had agreed to let The Detroit News see the new Liberty as well as to interview some of the people behind the vehicles new design.

The all-new 2008 Liberty that will hit dealerships beginning the third quarter of this year is equipped with the many elements that arched this vehicle to become a top seller in the small SUV segment. Designers also straightened out most of the Libertys curves but at the same time retained some of the individual quirks, while adding a few more features. There are two types of Jeeps, modern and classic. We wanted the Liberty to mature but still remain playful. The open top was really an engineering tour de force, said Ralph Gilles, Jeeps top designer. He was also the on responsible for the interior design of the original Liberty that debuted in 2002.

Liberty engineers were also very pleased with the all-new Sky Slide which they claimed is an industry exclusive and create a giant sunroof that measures 33 inches by 41 inches.

To open the sunroof a switch is used to open the roof electronically, gathering the canvas at either end. Once its completely open, passengers in the second row will be able to enjoy an open sky ride. Jeep has spent couple of months just to ensure that the roof will not leak and would seal tightly when closed.

The new Liberty looks bulky because its bigger, which was the main objective of the designers and engineers when they increased its overall length by 2 inches, stretched the wheelbase by 2 inches, and expanded the cargo space by 3 inches. The spare tire which was once placed on the rear hatch was moved under the body just behind the rear axle.

By stretching the Liberty slightly opens up the interior. There are new comfortable seats provided for the new Liberty like for instance the drivers seat now pushes back farther and providing enough room for bigger drivers. Sound deadening, Jeep nerf bar, and other refinements make the new Liberty quieter than the previous generation Liberty. The new 2008 Liberty also retained the seven-bar grille but makes it more refined.

The classic round headlights have been encased in glass housing and become part of the grilles face topped by a clamshell hood. The rounded taillights have been replaced with lean rectangular ones that help organized the disorganized rear end.

The all-new 2008 Jeep Liberty also retained the 3.7 liter V6, the powertrain was modified to enhance fuel economy to an estimated 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway based on the more stringent 2008 EPA numbers, Reuter said. Engineers and designers also included new front and rear suspension to make sure that the Liberty performs well both on and off the road.

The Jeep Liberty has been an all-time success for Chrysler since its introduction in 2002 and for its 2008 model the Liberty will undergo an extreme makeover. The competition in the mid-size SUV segment that seems to grow more competitive by the day has marked the time for the Jeep brand to launch its Liberty.

The Liberty has been redesigned to roll out its Grand Cherokee sibling at the New York Auto Show. One noticeable feature of the 2008 Liberty is the increase in its body figure which was increased by 2 inches longer and half inch wider than the outgoing model. Such increase in length and width increases the legroom of the rear passengers by 1.5 inches and at the same time provide an additional cargo space---these are precisely the two elements where the previous Liberty was said to be lacking as compared to its competition.

The bigger dimension of the new 2008 Jeep Liberty gives it a more serious look. There are also other distinctions such as the electronic controls for the radio and info center which are available for the Limiteds four-spoke, leather-covered steering wheel and the satin silver center console which are not found in the Sport version. The cargo area of the Limited resides an Infinity subwoofer and amplifier while the Sport gets a storage bin instead.

Underneath the bodywork is an independent front suspension and five-link rear suspension which improve both handling and comfort. Other features include two Jeep Trail Rated four-wheel drive setups (the Command-Trac and the Selec-Trac II), the 3.7 liter V6 engine delivers the same 210 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque as before but made even more fuel efficient recording 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg in the highway. These figures are based on the reworked 2008 EPA standards.

It is almost two consecutive years that the automotive industry havent heard about the production model of Chrysler Group's off-road concept called the Jeep Hurricane since it was unveiled at the 2005 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

During its unveiling at the NAIAS two years ago, Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President - Chrysler Group Design said: Jeep Hurricane is simply the most maneuverable, most capable and most powerful 4x4 ever built. It pays homage to the extreme enthusiasts' Jeep vehicles in form and off-road capability, but is a unique interpretation of Jeep design. Simply stated, it is the extreme example for the Jeep brand.

Out in the wilderness, changing direction in minimal space can mean the difference between an afternoon of adventure and a distress call back to the trailhead. The multi-mode four-wheel steering system on Jeep Hurricane is designed to offer enthusiasts the next level of performance and unexpected maneuverability, he further explained.

One interesting feature of the Jeep Hurricane is that it does not have roof or even a side door. The concept has only two seats for occupants and equipped with body architecture exclusively for an enhanced off-road performance. In fact, the Jeep Hurricane concept was chosen by Autoweek as the winner of their Most Fun Concept vehicle award at the show.

Although many patented technologies were secured in the Hurricanes development, some automotive experts as well as DCX said that the concept vehicle is not expected to be a production vehicle in the near future. World War II Jeeps Displayed at the Sixth US Calvary Museum

Fort Oglethorpe Kiwanis was recently given the privilege to take a glimpse at the two unrestored World War II Ford Jeeps from 1944 and 1945 at the Sixth Cavalry Museum. According to Chris McKeever, the museum executive director, The museum was originally organized by the Sixth US Cavalry Association. They always wanted a jeep here. We wanted an authentic one and so Matt Fox located these two Jeeps in South Carolina. McKeever also added that the US Calvary Association has purchased the Jeeps and donated them. They were priced wonderfully and had so many original parts, although no Jeep fuel injector yet at that time was added but all the rest were guaranteed authentic Jeep parts. It was actually last March 9 when the Kiwanis came to visit and McKeever have encouraged them all to take part in the success of the museum.

McKeever said, What we need to do is to let everyone in Catoosa Country know its here. The Kiwanis were given the royal treatment at the museum where they were served lunch, ushered to tour the museum and were given surprise presentations.

One of the volunteer at the museum Chris Lane made his museum display even more interesting by adding WWII memorabilia which include his grandfathers Marine uniform. McKeever also said that one of the huge attractions at military museums is the military hardware on display like the Patton tank.

Likewise, Matt Fox of Quarter Ton and Military Restoration Parts of Rising Fawn also shared with the group his plans on how to restore the 1944 Jeep. Fox recalled that he purchased his very first Jeep at the age of 13 with the money he earned from mowing yards unfortunately his dad took his Jeep away after Fox knock out a wall and drive the Jeep all through their garage.

Fox said, It gets in your blood. Its very much addictive. There is so much history in these Jeeps. He explained also that the restoration process of the 1944 Jeep will take at least 18 months and will cost approximately $8,000 for parts and supplies to restore the Jeep in its original glory.

In return for Fox restoration efforts the museum will award him with the 1945 Jeep, said McKeever. The Kiwanis President Judy Jackson said after the tour that she is happy to see that Fort Oglethorpe has a place where the stories of soldiers who bravely fought during the war are recognized and shared.

She also recalls the effect that war films had on her father, which she said would usually make her dad cry although she could never get him to talk about his experiences but she knows from her fathers reactions that he has been through a lot during the war.

McKeever has also taken the opportunity to invite all those who are interested to volunteer for their day-to-day assistance and for the upcoming preparations for the National Military Appreciation Month which will be held this coming May. The museum is open starting Tuesday to Saturday at 9:00 AM- noon and 1 to 4 PM. The admission only cost $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and students. Children aged 6 and below are free of charge while families that will come to visit the museum will be charged $10.

Owning a Jeep and self-modifying it seem to go hand in hand like owning a hot tub and soaking. You see other jeeps tooling down the road and they look so much more,..?well, Jeep-like. You know the look ?Rough and ready to rock on!? A lot of first time owners may wonder, ?What do I need to do to get that look?? Well you can give your vehicle that look with 4 modifications.

First, tires and wheels are a good place to start. Those stock tires are pretty wimpy looking and spicing up the tires and wheels goes a long way to making your Jeep take on a new appearance. You?ll want to consider if you?ll be installing a lift and how much of one before you jump on the tires. The bigger the lift the larger the tires you?ll be able to run. Tires and wheels might be a simple way to change the look of your rig, but they won?t be an inexpensive way to go. They can be downright costly! You?ll need to consider your Jeep use before investing. Is it a daily driver, purely an offroad vehicle, or a mix of the two? You?ll also want to consider how your Jeep is powered and geared. You know their bumpers have been tested, passed DOT regulations, and the company stands behind them for defects. You won?t get any of that from a local shop, and even if you do, who knows how long they?ll be around to support it? Warrior makes a good basic steel bumper along with tube units. Warn makes a nice Rock Crawler Bumper with an optional grille guard. And ARB makes a tube bumper they call a Bull Bar. Earlier, The Truth About Cars (TTAC) conducted a survey having its faithful and candid readers as respondents. The survey is all about tracking the Ten Worst Automobile Today (TWAT) from all the vehicles available in the United States within this year. The polls and tallying are closed. Further, the winners are yet to be unraveled. The winners of the 2006 TTAC Ten Worst Automobile Today awards are the following:

On the tenth place is Chevrolet Aveo. The automaker claims that said car is the lowest [new car in America however; the contents of the vehicle may vary. In the United States and Canada, Aveo is available in both 5-door and 4-door models. Chevrolet Aveo sedan debuted in January this year at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show. Lincoln Mark LT landed on the ninth place. According to TTAC's voters, the car is an unholy degradation of the world-famous Lincoln Mark nomenclature. In addition, it is said that the Mark LT is a rolling testament to Dearborn's short-term, suicidal reliance on bean-counted engineering.

Saab 9-7x entered in the eighth place of the TWAT. Voters say that the car is nothing more than a Chevy Trailblazer with the ignition key between the seats. Subaru B9 Tribeca, a crossover SUV, settled on the seventh place. Some enthusiasts are saying Subaru should not have bothered building an SUV.

On the sixth place is Chevrolet Monte Carlo, which is said to be a wrong wheel-drive engineering joke from the late '80's. Next on the line is the Hummer H2. The latter, according to some, is so heavy that IRS will give the purchaser a tax break because you just bought a piece of commercial farm equipment. They further added that it looks like a school bus from behind and a morbidly obese Cherokee from every other angle.

The fourth placer is Chrysler Aspen. Simon and Garfunkel said, Every way you look at this you lose. Some of the comments to this car are: It's ugly. It's thirsty. It's slow. It's badly built. It's cramped. It's expensive. Landing on the third place is Buick Rendezvous, which is based on a 1997 minivan.

Jeep Compass landed on the second place. Jeep auto parts that include round headlights and a 7-slot grill made Compass repulsive to TTAC enthusiasts.

Finally, the worst among the worst belong to General Motors. GM Minivans Talk emerged as the TTAC's accolade as the worst vehicles currently for sale in America. Chevrolet Uplander, Pontiac SV6, Buick Terraza, and Relay that boasts its Saturn auto body parts fall short of pleasing aficionados.

Does the Yaris Render the Prius Obsolete?

Toyota?s latest model is the subcompact Yaris, a replacement for the Echo and the newest entry level car for the division. Retailing for just under $11,000 the Yaris may impact the sales of another, slightly larger Toyota model. Is it the Corolla? No. How about the Matrix? No. The model I am thinking about is the Prius, Toyota?s compact hybrid hauler.

The whole idea of buying a hybrid car is to conserve fuel and save money, right? In part, that is a true statement. However, the price of a vehicle must also be factored in and the Yaris will be retailing for $10,000 less than the Prius. In addition, the Yaris is a real gas sipping car. EPA figures are showing that the Yaris will deliver 34 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. This compares to the 60 mpg city and 51 mpg highway for the Prius?and we all know that hybrid fuel economy figures are being widely attacked from all quarters for being vastly overstated.

The difference in published fuel economy is only 11 mpg on the highway. Given the Prius? premium price I predict that the Yaris will steal sales away from the Prius as buyers take note of the $10,000 price premium. Sure, governments incentives [soon to go away, perhaps? reduce that amount by at least $2,000 but the Prius?s price premium is a hefty chunk that no amount of driving can make up that difference.

Of course, there is also the matter of replacing an expensive and aged hybrid battery...
